Washington & Chesapeake Road. Col S. Taylor Suit, who was in Baltimore yesterday, was enthusiastic over the progress of the Washington & Chesapeake Railroad enterprise. He said men are at work night and day, and the rights of way have all been secured from Fishing Creek to Plum Point When finished passengers from Baltimore via the Baltimore & Ohio or Baltimore & Potomac and the new road can reach Chesapeake Beach in an hour and a-half, and Washington people can get to that new resort in 45 minutes. Col Suit considers the Southern MD Railroad enterprise to be practically dead, at least at the present time, and the Washington & Point Lookout Road in not much better condition. He said that after the expenditure of $400,000 he is prepared to abandon them, so far as he is concerned.

What the People Favor. There was unanimity of opinion among the gentlemen at last night’s meeting that another method of selecting a committee should be adopted. In questioning them on what plan would be the most satisfactory, they said that each section of the city should be allowed to hold a meeting to select its representative men, and that these should be sent to represent the interests of their respective localities, and that the committee of 100 should be selected from among them. There was considerable feeling against the alleged attempt to ignore the southern and eastern sections in the selection of last week’s committee.
“We don’t want such a committee, and we won’t have it, and if it is necessary we will fight,” said S. Taylor Suit this morning. “I own as much land in and about Washington as any five of them.” he continued, heating up a little. “I’ve had a score of the solid citizens of Washington to come to me and protest against the way in which that committee was selected,” he continued. “We don’t want ninety-seven men out of a hundred from one section. The very idea of issuing a call one day and holding a meeting the next to select a committee, is absurd. If they give us sufficient time we may get a committee that will be a credit to the object for which it is selected.” He stated that a committee had been appointed to wait on Mr. W. W. Corcoran to ascertain whether he had authorized his name to be used at the last week’s meeting.

Responsibility of Dormant Partners. - In the US Circuit Court, before Judges Bond and Giles, in the case of the First National Bank of VA against Samuel Taylor Suit, which was on trial for 3 days, the jury on Sat rendered a verdict for defendant. This case involved an interesting question of the responsibility of dormant partners. Samuel T. Suit, the defendant, lent $5000 to George W. Ely to enable him to go into the banking business in NY as partner in the firm of Boteler & Ely - the money to be returned in one year, and Ely to give Suit one-half of his share of the profits. - Plaintiff alleged also that Suit held himself out as a partner in the said firm, which defendant denied. The court ruled that defendant, Suit, could not be held liable for the debts of the firm on the contract with one member of it, that being an individual loan, and not to the partnership, and the share of profits being only half of Ely’s, which he had a right to dispose of as he pleased; but that if defendant represented himself to plaintiff as a partner in such a way that plaintiff dealt with said firm on the credit of his responsibility, then he was liable. This question of fact went to a jury, and their verdict was rendered for defendant.

Scandalous Robbery of the Citizens of Washington - The Way a Congressional Investigation was Squelched - Was not Hon. Henry L. Dawes a Partner in this Bold and Atrocious Fraud!
… conspiracy by which the citizens of Washington were robbed of a square of ground worth at least a million dollars by Henry D. Cooke, Boss Shepherd, & others. This ground was reserved for a public market place when the land for the city of Washington was originally conveyed to the Commissioners appointed by Pres. Washington, and was always recognized as city property. In1870, however, Congress was induced to pass a bill incorporating the Washington Market Company, and giving to that corporation the Market square for the term of ninety-nine years at a nominal rent….
A more scandalous job than this has seldom passed through the Congressional mill; but what makes it particularly deserving of attention is, that a qarrel (sic) among the original conspirators has led to some curious developments, which require an immediate explanation from the Hon. Henry L. Dawes. One of the most prominent projectors of this job was Mr. Edward R. Tinker of North Adams, MA, a gentleman long known in Washington and elsewhere as the next friend of the MA Congressman….
The man who was left out in the cold. And now comes the pith of my story. S. T. Suit, the brother-in-law of Tinker [Tinker is actually S. T. Suit’s wife’s Uncle] was “froze out” in the new arrangement which was made as above stated. He was not disposed to quietly submit to what he deemed a great wrong. He therefore commenced proceedings in the Supreme Court of the District of Columbia against Tinker and the Washington Market Company….

Washington, DC, Apr 20 - The Inter-Ocean publishes a story about Secretary Bristol and S. T. Suit, a MD State Senator, and a gentleman of wealth and position, which the Inter-Ocean appears to wish to have true, and which charges a dishonorable act upon Bristol. Ben Bristol has denied it, and challenges his accusers in the spirited note of last night, and the Caulfield Committee has been forced, in justice, to write him a letter stating that the charges were disproved, and now Suit himself publishes the following card:
To the Public: My name has been mentioned in connection with an alleged payment to the Hon. B. H. Bristol, Secretary of the Treasury, of $40,000, an inducement to him to resign his position as US District Attorney for KY, and to release my distillery. I wish to say that I have not lived in KY since 1861; that I have not owned or had anything to do with distilleries in that state, or anywhere else, for the last twenty years; that I never paid Mr. Barstow, either directly or indirectly, one sent in all my life for any purpose whatever, and that no one has for me; that he has never acted as my attorney on any matter whatever. I am utterly at a loss to account for the base and baseless slander which connects my name with his. Although my attention was called to it by the Washington correspondent of the Inter-Ocean some time last summer or fall, I then denounced the whole story without regard to its origin as utterly false, wart and woof, and without the slightest foundation in fact. This denial I most emphatically repeat to-day, and challenge all proof to the contrary. Washington, DC, Apr 19, 1876. S. T. Suit
He would be a brave man to have the courage to charge S. T. Suit with falsehood. It is not difficult to trace the origin of these stories, or to discover to whom the Caulfield Committee is lending itself. The Whisky Ring will have to try again.

Washington, DC, Nov 2 - Col S. Taylor Suit has incurred a very great loss, and the country about Washington has been deprived of one of its finest suburban residences, in the destruction by an incendiary fire of the fine house at Suitland. Few persons who visit Washington know of the existence of the Town of Suitland. It is a small rural hamlet, situated upon the MD plateau, overlooking the Upper Potomac country and the Anacostia, about two miles and a half east of the Navy-Yard. It is but one mile beyond the District line. It comprises about 3000 acres of land, and is populated by some 300 souls. The little hamlet is named after the plantation of Mr. Suit, which, indeed constitutes nearly all of the place. Mr. Suit, whose name is known to the drinkers of Kentucky whisky, has for a long time lived at this suburban retreat near Washington, leading the life of an English landed Baron. His farm contained large orchards, fine grain fields, costly hot-houses, and a stock of blood and breed that would be the envy of any KY gentleman. His orchard is five miles in circumference, containing every variety of fruit that can be raised in this region. In his vineyard there are 50,000 vines, with an average annual crop of 300 tons. Attached to the farm is a hunting-park, two miles in circumference, with fine oaks and cypress groves, in which deer, elk, and all sorts of rare animals are found. One hundred hands are required annually to gather the fruit crop. The ordinary yield of tobacco is 100 hogsheads. The plantation is worked by about 100 negroes, mostly from the lower counties of MD. They are all provided with neat and comfortable houses. During the negotiation of the treaty with England, Earl De Grey and Sir Stafford Northcote were frequent visitors at this country seat. The residence itself, which was destroyed, cost about $50,000, and was filled with the choicest gems of art. Mr. Suit has been a Republican in politic, and has, consequently, been as much of an anomaly in his political opinions as his fine estate has been exceptional in the somewhat barren MD plains. Ne clew to the incendiary has yet been found, but there are reasons to suspect that this great calamity is in some way attributable to political dissensions.

Washington, D.C., 4 Mar 1881. J.H. Linville, Esq., President Southern MD Railroad, Phila, PA:
Sir: I observe that a letter bearing your signature, dated Philadelphia, Mar 1st, to Messrs A. W. Dimock & Co, of NY, charges that certain statements made by me in a letter to said firm, dated Washington, Feb 25th, are untrue. I now reiterate the fact that a judgement of $30,000 agt. the Southern MD Railroad is held by the Company of which I am President as will appear by an examination of the Records of St Mary’s County Court, No. 85 Trials, Sept. Term, 1878, a certified copy of which I herewith transmit to you.
I also stated that we held the obligations of the Southern MD RR Co in notes to a large amount. This allegation you substantially admit.
I did not say there were judgments against you to the amount of a quarter of a million dollars. Your denial is therefore disingenuous.
I did say, “Its other debts, many being in the form of judgments, are estimated to amount to considerably over a quarter of million dollars,” and I will give you sufficient data for the assertion.
The Southern MD RR Co owes the State of MD $163,000 and interest from 1873, for amount of money paid to said company by the State under false representations, and the Attorney-General of the State filed this claim as a debt due to the State as will appear by the proceedings in the suit for the appointment of a receiver brought by the creditors of said road in Prince George’s county; this, with interest, amounts now to about $240,000. There were other claims represented by counsel which amounted to $175,000. There is also a judgment in the Superior Court of Baltimore City in favor of Starr & Ridenour, amounting to about $8000.
There are also other debts owing by-your company to parties in the various counties which your alleged proposed railroad traverses.
I inclose an extract from a letter from Hon. George D. Mudd, ex-State Senator from Charles county, as to his knowledge of it in his own and adjoining counties.
I also beg to call your attention to the report of the investigating committee of the General Assembly of MD, of the session of 1876, contained in the journal of the Senate. Referring to the reports filed therein you will see that, according to the testimony of Mr. Smoot, the president of the Southern MD Railroad Company that, “in addition to an indebtedness in bills payable of over $75,000, and numerous other claimants not so secured, bonds of the company to the amount of $2,200,000 have been issued, and a large amount have been floated;” and, further, that the investigating committee recommended, “that the Attorney-General of the State take legal proceedings as may be necessary to secure the proper application of the money subscribed to the stock of said company and the interest of the state in said company.”
And a minority report filed therein even recommended “that the testimony and papers in the case be referred to the grand jury of the Criminal Court of Baltimore City.” These same records contain many pages of instructive reading of similar tenor.
And further, there are two mortgages to the Central Trust Company of NY on record dated Jan 1, 1881, one for $1,600,000, the other for $500,000. Now, then, with these two mortgages and the $2,200,000 of bonds referred to in your former president’s testimony, and the other amounts owing by your company, what will be the indebtedness per mile of your proposed road?
Nearly every Congress for the past thirteen years, including the last has refused your application to enter the city of Washington or even the District of Columbia.
I do not care here to indulge in personalities, but to refer you to facts, all susceptible of proof and matters of record accessible to the public.
Respectfully, S. T. Suit
[Extract of letter of Hon. George D. Mudd, ex-State Senator of MD]
Dear Sir: The name of the Southern MD Railroad Company in this section is synonymous with fraud and rascality. Our people have been robbed and hated by the officers and contractors of the company, and I can give you ample proof thereof.
As chairman of the committee of th Senate of MD which investigated the affairs of the company, in connection with its obtaining $163,000 from the State by fraud, the evidence showed conclusively to my mind the fraudulent manner in which the money referred to was obtained, and the papers ought to have been sent to the proper grand jury and the swindlers properly punished.
The matter will again be brought before the next Legislature for further action in the premises. George D. Mudd

Johnny Boquet in New York Tribune. Being at Point Lookout, MD during the week examining the new railroad from Washington City to that point, its projector S. Taylor Suit, once the Ariel of the Gold Room in New York, later a MD planter, told this reminiscence:
“There lived near me in Prince George’s county, at Upper Marlborough, a cousin and favorite of Gen Robert E. Lee, named John F. Lee. He was Judge Advocate of the US Army, and when the war broke out was absurd enough to resign this comfortable place and his rank of Major to go over to the confederacy. My intimate relations with him led me to know Col R. E. Lee slightly. At the close of the war, about Apr 12, 1865, I made a visit to Richmond, VA with the US Marshal at Washington, Ward H. Lamon. On Sat night I went to his room at the Spotswood hotel, and found him lying on his bed weeping. I inquired the cause, but he sobbed that he could not tell me then. Being mystified and excited, I pressed to know his grievance, and he finally said: ‘I am going off in the morning to Washington; before I go I will tell you.’ He informed me at Rocketts, as the steamer was about to depart that President Lincoln had been murdered. I came ashore again, and filled with the weight of such information, which was known to but few in Richmond, I thought it would justify me in calling on Gen Lee, who had arrived a day or two before, and was at his dwelling. There I was told that Gen Lee was about to attend religious services, but would be at home about half past 12 o’clock. I called again, and he received me cordially, and inquired particularly for various friends, places and interests about Washington, Baltimore and MD, I finally said to him: ‘Gen Lee, I have a piece of private information which I came here to give you, sir. The president of the US, Abraham Lincoln, was assassinated night before last in Washington City.’ He turned suddenly, his face being but half turned toward me before, and looked into my eyes with an expression I shall never forget. He looked me through and through. General, said I, there can be no doubt of it. The president’s marshal, Col Lamon, told me of it, and it has been fully confirmed in cipher messages to the military authorities. ‘What do you think about it, Gen Lee?’ He raised his head and chin, and assumed a positive expression and exclaimed: ‘The south has lost her best friend!’ Before I came away I remarked: ‘General, I would like to have your opinion as to who is the best of your generals?’ He answered, still a little stunned and preoccupied: ‘A man I never saw. A man named Forrest’”

Shared by annej4153 Clements: The. News of the death of Grandma Stephenson, came as a sad shock to the many relatives and friends. She had just come to make a visit at her daughters Mrs Dana White’s home and was seemingly in her usual health when she (started?) with her little grandson to see the furnace in the cellar. On the stairs she was seized by a paralytic stroke and fell about three steps. She never regained consciousness and died Sunday morning. She leaves a number of children and grandchildren who will sadly miss her. Mrs Stephenson was 74 years old and has lived a great part of her life at the old Stephenson home on Silver Creek.
