17287Pg 84 Hugh Le Despenser, 2nd Lord Despenser. He was disinherited & exiled 19 Aug 1321. He took refuge in the Cinque Ports, and engaging in piracy, with the King's connivance, did considerable damage. After the battle of Boroughbridge, he received large grants of lands forfeited by the rebels. He accompanied the King in his fight to Wales in Oct 1326. Hugh Le Despenser, Lord Le Despenser, was taken to Hereford, tried, without being allowed to speak in his own defence, condemned to death as a traitor and hanged 24 Nov 1326

Hugh Le Despenser, Lord Despenser, who, after his exile in 1321 “took refuge in the Cinque Ports, and, engaging in piracy, with the king’s connivance, did considerable damage.” “In 1324 he complained to the Pope that he was threatened by magical and secret dealings; but the Pope could only advise him to turn to God with his whole heart and to make a good confession.” He was with Edward II in his flight to Wales and was captured with him. He was taken to Hereford, tried without being allowed to speak in his own defense, condemned as a traitor and hanged on a gallows 50 feet high 26 Nov 1326. His head was set up on London Bridge, and his quarters sent to be hung up at Dover, Bristol, York and Newcastle (his bones were later collected and buried in Tewkesbury Abbey with his wife.
