Joan of England (of Acre) Marr2: clandestinely, presumably early in 1297, Ralph De Monthermer. The marriage enraged her father, the King, and he committed Ralph to prison in Bristol Castle, and all Joan's lands were seised into the King's hand. By the mediation of Anthony Bec, Bishop of Durham, however peace was made between the King & his dau, & her lands were restored to her 31 Jul 1297, Ralph having done homage.

At the death of King Henry III 16 Nov 1272, the Earl took the lead in swearing fealty to Edward I, who was then in Sicily returning from the Crusade. As Prince Edward (later Edward I) had also been captured, Montford and the Earl were now supreme.” But by the following year Gilbert had changed sides “and in the battle of Evesham, 4 Aug, in which Montfort was slain, commanded the 2nd division and contributed largely to the victory … (and) at the death of Henry III, 16 Nov 1272, the Earl took the lead in swearing fealty to Edward I.”17289
