11214Jack Hesse Life History 1991:
11290Since the Korean "conflict" was on & I was classified 1A for the draft I was unable to get a teaching job so went back to Longview & to work as an inspector in the machine shop at the LeTournsn factory. My draft call came up in early 1954 & since I had joined the Naval Reserve while in college I elected to take active duty in the Navy - so went on active duty in 1 March 1954. The Navy was a good experience - I went to radio school and became a radioman - serving in CA (San Diego Area) and the other half of the time aboard ship all over the Far East - Japan, Formosa, China, Vietnam & Korea). ... I was released from active duty in 31 Jan 1956 (a month early) in order to enroll at North TX State University to begin work on my master's degree.
