Pg 147 Sec 1 Howard: Matthew Howard of VA: Will of Rd Hall (1 Aug 1645; 15 Nov 1645 (sic), Old Portsmouth records, Liber B, fol 96) gives Matthews ch: … In the value or suitableness of the bequests there is a slight upward gradation, from Ann to Eliz and from Matthew Jr to Samuel; thus indicating that the can are named in the reverse order of their birth. This is most evident in the case of Saml. As the oldest son, he is the chief beneficiary, in the bequest of Hall’s “money and tobacco.” He was then about 17 or 18 yrs of age. Accepting this hypothesis as probably true and noting that the Southern records give precisely the same order for the 6 chn ….98539
