81221 John Hatch, a well-known liberal and opportunist who rose to importance during the Commonwealth. From 1654 to 1658 John Hatch was a member of the commission or governing body of the Province which under the chairmanship of Richard Preston ruled the colony for four years or so. After the Puritan downfall Hatch regained his good favor with the Calverts only by the payment of a heavy fine.

Pg 165-166, (Thomas Allen) furthermore did not wish his sons to be “sold for slaves or Morter-Boyes”, but left them with his “very loving ffriends John Hatch & Rich: Banks”. ... He furthermore appointed his loving friends John Hatch or in his absence William Marshall and Richard Banks to be the overseers of his estate (3 Archives, vol 4 pp 403, 447) John Hatch had been one of the servants of Clobery & Co on Kent and later settled in St Mary’s County where he became a foe to the Proprietary Government.
