25400Pg 207 Chap 2, Richard Fitz Alan, Earl of Arundel (see FitzAlan 23, Chapter 1; and Lancaster 26-iii) b: 1346 (Marr: age 13); bearer of the crown at the coronation of Richard II, 1377 (age 31); Privy Councilor and Admiral of the West and South 1377 (age 31) and of all England 1386 (age 40); in 1388 (age 42) he & the Duke of Gloucester, the King's uncle, led the first revolt against Richard II, for which he was pardoned 1394 (age 48), but was treacherously seized 12 Jul 1397, tried & beheaded in Cheapside 21 Sep 1397 (age 51), where, Walsingham said, he showed “no more shrinking or changing colour than if he were going to a banquet.” and was described as “a gallant, hot tempered, popular man, the persistent political opponent and bitter personal enemy of Richard II; he was one of the best sea-captains of the time.”
