Image 825&826of1196 VA Albemarle Co Court, 5 Jul 1824 personally appeared in open court … Walter Watson resident in said county aged 64 yrs … sworn according to law … on his oath made the following declaration in order to obtain the provision made by the acts of Congress of 18 Mar 1818 & 1 May 1820 that he the said Walter Watson enlisted for the sum of three years in August 1780 in Prince George County MD in the company commanded by Capt Madock in the Regiment commanded by Col. Smith in the line of the state of MD on Continental establishment that he continued in the said Regiment until they joined the Southern Army when he was transferred to the second MD Regiment Commanded by Col. Howard and served under Capt Mason & afterwards under Capt Bauff that he continued to serve in the said ___ mentioned corps until 1783 when he was discharged from the said service in Anne Arundel County MD. That he was in the Battles of Guilford Court House, Camden, Eutaw Spring and the siege of 96 and that he has no other evidence now in his power of his said services except the testimony of Edward Hughes. That he is by occupation a farmer and now lives on a piece of land which he rents at the rate of $20 a year. That he is afflicted with the Rheumatism & in consequence thereof is frequently disqualified from laboring. That his family at present consists of his wife who is five years older than himself and very infirm and an unmarried daughter aged 30 yrs the rest of his children having married and left him.
And in pursuance of the act of the 1 May 1820 I do solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the US on the 18 Mar 1818 and that I have not since that time by gift, sale or in any manner disposed of my property or any part thereof, with intent thereby to diminish it, so as to bring myself, within the provisions of an Act of Congress entitled. An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the and and Naval services of the US in the Revolutionary War passed on 18 Mar 1818; and that I have not ___ ___ any person in land for me any property or securities contracts or debts owed to me. Nor have I any income or property which belong to me other that what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed and by me subscribed. viz: 2 sheats?; 6 bushels of corn, 19 lb bacon, 2 bushels wheat, 15 stocks rye about 10 bushels. A parcel of wheat to cut say about 15 or 18 bushels, a parcel of flax growing, 2 old barrels, 2 turkey hens & 20 young __ 9 old hens & 30 chickens. /s/ Walter Watson; Sworn to and declared in Open Court setting this 5 July 1824. I also certify that the foregoing oath and the schedule therein contained are truly copied from the records of the said court, and I do further certify that it is the opinion of the court that the property in value exhibited in the foregoing schedule is $75 and that this court is a court of record, being legally so constituted by State authority. On 31 Mar 1855 personally appeared before me, a Justice of the Peace with the Co & State aforesaid, Walter Watson, aged 95 yrs, a resident of said County and State, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical Walter Watson who was a Private in the Company commanded by Capt (blank) in the Regiment of (blank) commanded by Col (blank) in the war of the American Revolution & is now a Pensioner on the Pension Roll of US as appears by his certificate of pension dated the (blank) day of (blank). A. B. Magruder of Charlottesville, VA is hereby authorized to prosecute this my claim and to receive any warrant which may be issued hereon. /s/ Walter (his mark) Watson (seal). 2 Witnesses: James B. Data furnished herein were obtained from papers on file in the pension claim S 41301, based upon the military service of Walter Watson. He enlisted in Prince Georges Co MD in Aug 1780, as private in Capt Madock’s Co, Col Smith’s MD Regt, was transferred to Col Howard’s 2nd MD Regt & served in Capt Mason’s & Bruff’s Companies; he was in the battles of Camden, Guilford, Ninety-Six and Eutaw Springs and was discharged 15 Nov 1783. He was allowed pension on his application executed 5 Jul 1824 at which time he was 64 years of age and a resident of Albemarle Co VA. He died between 1 Apr and 20 Sep 1855, exact date not given. In 1824 reference was made to his wife who was 5 yrs older that (sic) he and to an unmarried daughter, then 30 yrs old & to a son; there were other children, all of whom were married in 1824. The names of wife & children were not given. The wife died before the soldier but the date of her death was not given. In 1813 one Benjamin N. Watson was living in Albemarle Co VA but his relation to the soldier was not given. (Handwritten on it - Death of Sold. not on agency book.)

Magruder to Comm of Pensions: On 25 Sep last I enclosed to your office the land Warrant No. 6407 issued to Walter Watson a Revolutionary Pension entitled to bounty land and informed you at the same time of his death before the issue of land warrant. Requested the favor of you to acknowledge the return receipt of the warrant as a proper voucher for me to there that the the warrants came into my hands as the agent (as I presume the records of your office would show) yet in fact I had sent it back the Pensioner being dead. Not having heard anything from you since, may I again ask the favor of some acknowledgement of the return of the warrant for cancellation. /s/ A. B. Magruder

Image 837of1196 Ltr Albemarle Co VA 7 Aug 1824 from Charles Brown: Sir, At June or July court last for this County, a certain Walter Watson delivered into Court of which I was a member a schedule for the purpose of obtaining a pension under the ads of Congress. On inquiry of this neighbors it is said said (sic) Watson has conveyed his property (land) to his son, in order that he may belief within the meaning of the Acts aforesaid. He is able bodied & free from wound or bruise as I believe. This communication is made under the conviction that said Watson is not a proper subject to receive the munificence of the US.

On this 31st day of March 1855 personally appeared before me a Justice of the Peace within and for the County and State aforesaid, Walter Watson, aged 95 years, a resident of said County and State, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical Walter Watson who was a Private in the Company commanded by Captain ____ in the Regiment of ____ commanded by Col. ______ in the war of the American Revolution and is now a Pensioner on the Pension Roll of the U.S. as appeared by his certificate of Pension dated the __ day of ___.
He makes this declaration to obtain the bounty land to which he may be entitled, under the act of Congress approved the third day of March, 1855. He further declares that he has not received nor applied for bounty land under this or any other Acts of Congress, except as above stated.
A. B. Magruder, of Charlottesville, Virginia is hereby authorized to prosecute this my clam, and to receive any warrant which may be issued hereon.

MD, he applied (pension)5 July, 1824 in Ablemarle Co., Virginia aged 64 with a wife aged 69 & he refered to an unmarried daughter aged 30 & also referred to a son & to other married children in 1824 (no names given), soldier died between 1 Apr & 20 Sep 1855 leaving no widow, in 1813 a Benjamin N.
