Nichols in the surrender of New York to the English by the Dutch, as Capt Willett was not only an able diplomat, but a thorough master of the Dutch language and customs. So popular was he with both the English and Dutch of Manhattan that he was chosen first Mayor of New York in 1665 and was re-elected in 1666.
