The change of christian name was made to avoid that of Ball, and to continue that of Robert the Bruce, his maternal grandfather, and of Robert II, his father. His original title was Lord of Kyle, the district of Ayrshire where a portion of the estates of the Bruces lay.17387

Robert (III) (John) Stewart, King of Scotland, 1390-1406 John Stewart felt that his name was too closely associated with John Bailiol, so he adopted the title of King Robert (III). He preferred to lead a quiet life, and although he attended several parliaments, he handed the reigns of government over to his brother Robert Stewart of Fife.86084
