He commenced the House of Earlshall on an older foundation of the old Earls of Fife in 1546, which was finished by his great-grandson in 1617, as recorded in an inscription over the fireplace in the painted hall at Earlshall...Pg 33 Sir William (Bruce) had a crown charter 13 Nov 1504 as son & heir of the late Sir Alexander Broise of Erleshall ... with consent of his mother
