Misc. Notes
Hereward3, who was banished by William the Conqueror. It appears, however, that Hereward was allowed to return to England & it is certain that his family retained Wiggenhall & other portions of their inheritance in Norfolk.84857

Although William, Duke of Normandy, won the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and was crowned King of England in 1067, resistance to him continued under Hereward the Banished into 1071. Hereward was regarded as a hero by the English of his day, who hated their Norman conquerors. Nevertheless, approved Englished history says Hereward was a bandit, whom King William captured on the Island of Ely in 1071. Hereward’s land holdings were confiscated to the crown, and he was banished. After King William died, Hereward returned to England, and a succeeding King later returned one of his manors in Norfolk.84858
