3000Pg 5-6 James Trail aged 75 appeared 5 Sep 1832 Green Co TN court to declare benefit of his service in Amherst Co VA in 1777 was detailed from the company to guard the prisoners take at Burguines? Defeat and which had been sent to Albemarle Barracks near Charlottesville for safe keeping, under Lt (crossed out) Ensign Mathews, Col Hatcher of the Regulars probably had the command of the Barracks that continued there as a guard for the term of three months and was at the expiration of that time relieved by another recruit sent to take the place of those whose service was about to expire.
Second service in the last of the month of Jan 1781 he was drafted fm the class to which he belonged in Amherst Co VA to perform a tour of duty in the south against Cornwallis and was enrolled at Amherst under Capt Young Landram of the VA Militia and marched on to Guilford Court House NC where his company joined the main army under Gen Lawson, Col Holcomb & Maj Hubbard and was in the battle of Guilford and continued on as far as deep river after the said battle of Guilford and from the fact that the thence were so numerous, the army was marched on return together back to Dan River and was there discharged & returned home in Captains companies for self preservation. Said tour of duty being four months from the commencement until the final discharge that the regular croups and militia were but little together, save at the Battle of Guilford, where was the 18 months regular troops, with the militia in the aforesaid battle. That on their way to Guilford they passed through Rockingham, Prince Edward, Halifax Pennsylvania & on to guilford that he has no documentary evidence having lost his discharge, that he knows of no person whose testimony he can proactive who can testify to his service save that of Mr. Landrom annexed.
