Pg 185 In 1340 he was in the expedition to Flanders, taking part in the Battle of Sluys on 24 Jun, and the siege of Tournai in Jul. He fought at Crecy on 26 Aug 1346, in the Prince's division, and after the battle superintended the counting of the slain.
Thomas (de Holand) was a founder Knight of the Order of the Garter in 1348.
He was summoned to Parliament from 15 Mar 1353/4 by writ directed Thome (sic) de Holand.
In 1360 he was summoned as Earl of Kent.

Pg 196 Chap 2, Sir Thomas de Holand, then left to fight with the Teutonic nights in their Crusade against the heathen Lithuanians in East Prussia. Later in the French campaign at the capture of Caen 7-26-1346 (c 26), he took the Count of Eu prisoner, but surrendered him as a hostage to Edward III for 80,000 florins, “as much as Pope Clement paid for the whole city of Avignon,” and thus became a wealthy man. Meanwhile Edward III had Marr: Joan 1346 (18) to William de Montagu b: 1328 (Marr: 18) d: 1397 (69), Earl of Salisbury. Sir Thomas complained to the Pope 1347 “that he was Marr: to Joan more than 8 yrs ago and that while he was in Prussia Montagu Marr: her and unjustly detained her... The matter was referred to Cardinal Ademar, who, after examination, reported the earlier marriage legal, and the Pope thereupon 11-17-1349 ordered Joan restored to her lawful husband.” Michael Packe suggests, “It is possible that the whole tale (of the earlier marriage) was cock-and-bull; that they had simply become lovers quite lately. … and that she was pregnant by him. But Joan stood by it and Clement, always attentive to wealth accepted it.” After Thomas de Holand d: 12-28-1360 (c 40) Joan Marr3: 1361 (33) Edward the Black Prince, Prince of Wales, and became the mother of Richard II. Froissart described Joan as “la plus belle dame de tout la roiaulme d'Engleterre, et la plus amoureuse.”17386

Vol 9 Image1067of1356 Pg 1050 Holland, Sir Thomas, first Earl of Kent of the Holland family, soldier. He joined the expedition to Flanders in 1340 and took part in the battle of Sluys. In 1342 he was sent to Bayonne with Sir John d’Artevelle to defend the Gascon frontier. In 1344 he was chosen one of the founders of the order of the Garter. In 1346 he received a yearly annuity from Edward III, and the same year he accompanied the king in his invasion of France. He took an active part in the siege of Caen... He was summoned to parliament as Baron de Holland from 1353 to 1356 inclusive. In Oct 1359 he was appointed jointly with Philip of Navarre lieutenant and captain-general in all the English possessions in France and Normandy, and next year he assumed the title of Earl of Kent, in right of his wife, who had succeeded to her brother John, earl of Kent.17387
