Roger le Bigod At the battle of Fornham in 1173 he bore the standard of St Edmund, under which the royal forces fought, being thus in opposition to his father”; but on his father's death was not recognized as Earl of Norfolk. However, on 11-25-1189, Richard I created him Earl of Norfolk, “as his father Hugh had it in the time of Henry II, and the Stewardship as his father and grandfather had held it … In Jan 1214/5 he was still acting as a royal official, but in Jun he joined the barons in their ultimatum from Stamford to the King (John), and, with his son Hugh, was among the 25 barons elected to maintain Magna Carta. He was among the magnates excommunicated by the Pope in Dec., and his lands were forfeited and ravaged by the King. He returned to his allegiance, and had order for the restoration of his lands, Sep 1217.17289

He bore the standard of St Edmund, under which the royal forces fought at the battle of Fornham in 1173, and in 1186, he served as steward at the King’s Christmas court at Guilford. On 3 Sep 1189, he was among the barons who attended the Coronation of Richard I, who on the 25 Nov following, made him Earl of Norfolk, giving him the stewardship of Norwich and Norfolk which had been held by his father and grandfather before him. ... In Jun, he joined the Barons in their demand to the King, and with his son Hugh, was among the 25 Barons elected to maintain Magna Charta.54763
