Pg 32 Line 27, 29. Roger de Mortimer, 6th Baron Mortimer of Wigmore25651

Pg 106, 27. Roger de Mortimer. From 1255 to 1264 he was chiefly occupied in opposing his cousin Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, who was gradually uniting all the Welsh chieftans under his leadership. In the disputes between Henry III and the barons, Mortimer at first sided with the barons, but was with the King in 1264 at the taking of Northampton, but fled from the field at the battle of Lewes 5-14-1264. In 1265 he contrived the plan and furnished the swift horse by means of which Prince Edward escaped from Hereford Castle and came to Wigmore, where Mortimer rode out to meet him and drove off his pursuers. At the battle of Evesham 8-4-1265 Mortimer commanded the rearguard; and after Simon de Montfort's death, his head and testicles were sent to Mortimer's wife at Wigmore and Mortimer was liberally rewarded.17595
