Pg 55 Virginia's Share in the Military Movements of the Revolution
ARBOGAST, ADAM.--Pocahontas, Nov. 6, 1832. Born. 1760. Indian spy, 1776 or 1777. Drafted, and marched under Capt. John McCoy and Lt.
Joseph Gwin to West's fort on West Fork of Monogahela, then down the river to Lowther's Fort, then lower yet to Nutter's Fort, where he remained much of the three months, and finally to Coontie's Fort, where troops were called in consequence of the Indians killing a write woman while she was spreading hemp in a field. Volunteered, 1778, as Indian spy under same Captain, and marched to Warm Springs, whence he, together with George Hull,
John Gum, and Conrad Fleisher, were ordered to Crabbottom to guard that locality, and there remained the rest of his time. At another time he marched from his home (now Highland), across Greenbrier River to head of Seneca in pursuit of Indians. Date not given (1781?). [p.55]

25870 Adam Arbogast stated in a declaration he made in Nov 6, 1832 when he was 72 years of age, that he had served with George Hull, Conrad Fleisher & John Gum in the same company in the Revolutionary War. This John Gum would probably be John 4 Gum.

25870 When Adam Arbogast applied for a pension in 1832 he gave the following declaration: Adam Arbogast declaration: 6 Nov 1832, age 72; served in 1776 or 1777 as an Indian spy under Capt John McCoy and Joseph Gwinn and marcheed (sic) ---, marched to Warm Springs and with George Hull, Conrad Flesher, John Gum was ordered back by Col Hugert and Col. McCreary to guard his own section (S: Chaulkley, Scotch-Irish Settlement in VA II, p. 497)

3000Pg 5-7 Adam Arbogast, Pocahontas Co VA 6 Nov 1832. Age 72. Declaration: Entered service Summer 1776 or 1777 as an Indian Spy, he was drafted for and served three months under Captain John McCoy, Joseph Gwin Lieutenant. When drafted he lived in Augusta Co, now Pentleton on the South branch of the Potomac. He marched from the above place to Buchanon River at Bushes Fort where remained about two weeks. Then marched to the West Fork of the Monongahals River at West’s Fort where he remained about one or two weeks and from thence down the River to Lowthers Fort and from thence down the River to Matters Fort where we remained nearly the balance of the three months from thence to Coontz fort to which place we were called in consequence of the Indians having killed a White woman whilst she was spreading hemp in a field. That from thence we returned to Matters fort where we remained until his term of service expired. He received no discharge in writing. That he served another tour of three months as a volunteer in the year 1778 under the above named Captain John McCoy and Ensign Thomas Right as an Indian spy. That he started from the place above named tour the County of Augusta. Where he then resided and marched to the Warm Springs to the said county of Augusta. When himself, George Hull, Conrad Flesher and John Gum, were ordered by Col Hughart and Col McCrary to return to the place where he resided to spy and guard that section of the state of VA where he remained until the expiration of his term of service as an Indian spy. Some short time he does not recollect. That he marched from the place where he then resided across the Alleghany Mountains and across the Greenbrier Mountain River to the head of Seneca Creek, in pursuit of the Indians. That he was in no engagement. That he has no documentary evidence. That he knows of no persons now living whose testimony he can procure except George Hull, Eli B. Wilson and John Simmons. Whose certificate accompany this document. That he hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension Roll of the Agency of any state. Sworn & subscribed the day and year aforesaid. /s/ Adam Arbogast
We George Burner and Jack Warwick residing in the County of Pocahontas, hereby certify that we are well acquainted with Adam Arbogast who has subscribed & sworn to the above declaration. That we believe him to be 72 years of age. The he is reputed & believed in the neighborhood where he resides to have been an Indian spy and that we concur in that opinion. Sworn to & subscribe the day & year aforesaid. George Burner, Jacob Warrick
And the said Court do hereby declare there (sic) opinion after the investigation of the matter & after putting the interrogatories prescribed by the War Department. That the above named applicant was an Indian Spy and served as he states and the Court further certifies that it appears to them that George Burner and Jacob Warrick who have signed the preceeding certificate are residents of this County and that they are credible persons and that there statement is entitled to credit.
