English Origins of New England Families
69568 (Her Father or Brother?)
Pg 571 John Upham, the progenitor of the family in this country, was born in England about the year 1597. Neither his birth-place, nor who were his parents, has yet been ascertained. He came to MA in 1635, as we learn from the Public Record Office in London, where his name is included in a list of 106 passengers,* name of ship not given: “Bound for New England, Waymouth ye 20 Mar 1635” among others, John Upham age 35 (either his age given here or on the tombstone at Malden is incorrect). Elizabeth Upham, age 32. John Upham Jr. age 7. Sarah Upham age 26, Nathaniel Upham age 5. Elizabeth Upham age 3. Many of these passengers are mentioned as coming from different parishes in Somerset, but in the case of John Upham and family, the place was omitted. He had three other children, and as their names are not included in the above list, they may have been born in Weymouth, MA. Their names were Mary, Phineas and Priscilla. Phineas Upham, afterwards lieutenant, was also the ancestor of all the American Uphams. He d: of wounds received at the battle of Canonious, the Narraganset Fort. John Upham’s grave is still to be seen in the “old burying ground” at Malden, and bears the inscription, “Here lyes the body of John Upham, age 84. Died Feby 25th 1681.”
* The passengers accompanied the Rev. Joseph Hull, who with twenty-one families settled at Weymouth that year (Winthrop’s N.E., ed. 1853, i.194). Dr Upham, in his Genealogy, printed in 1845 (page 5), conjectured that John Upham came with Rev. Mr. Hull, and this list, which was not discovered till 1870, confirms his conjecture. The list was first printed in the Register for January, 1871 (ante, XXV. 13)-ED.

* In the same ship came “Robt Martyn of Badcome husband(superscript m) 44, Joane Martyn 44 Dorsst Richard Wade of Simatuly Cap aged 60, Elizabeth Wade his wife.” This evidently refers to Robert Martin, afterwards of Rehoboth. Is not the “Richard Wade” intended for Richard Webb, the other brother-in-law? (N.E. Reg, p.15) Matthew Allyn1 and his family also came on the ship, or at least their names are included in the same list of passengers who sailed from Weymouth, 20 Mar 1685.

Upham - This was a common name in England as early as 1200 and is supposed to be of Saxon origin The first to bear the name who arrived in America was John Upham, who is buried at Chelsea, MA, beneath a monument on which is engraved: “Here Lys ye body of John Upham, aged 84 years, Died Feb 25, 1681” He was born in England, it is thought in Somersetshire. He came to America with the Hull colony consisting of twenty-one families numbering one hundred and five souls, that sailed from Weymouth, in old Dorset, England, Mar 20, 1635, for the lands of the MA Bay Colony, arriving in Boston after a passage of forty-six days. They, settled at Weymouth, MA, where a small settlement already existed, called Wessaquscus. The following shows the Uphams who came over with the Hull colony as taken from the records. The relationship can be readily inferred: John Upham, aged thirty-five years; Elizabeth Upham, aged thirty-two years; Sarah Upham, aged twenty-four years; John Upham, Jr., aged seven years; Nathaniel Upham, aged five years; Elizabeth Upham, aged three years.
Sarah Upham is believed to have been sister of John Upham. He was a resident of Weymouth at least thirteen years. He was selectman; commissioner to treat with the Indians; court officer with power to try small causes in Weymouth and held other town offices. ... His wife was Elizabeth Webb, whom he married in England and was the mother of all his children.
