549491. Gilbert, surnamed Mareschal, with John, his son, in the reign of Henry I, were impleaded by Robert de Venviz & William de Hastings for the office of marshal to the King, but without success
2. John, surnamed Mareschal, s/o Gilbert, sided with Maud, the Empress, against Stephen; therefore, on the accession in 1154 of Maud’s son, Henry II, he had valuable lands in Wiltshire granted to him, and was the King’s Marshal.
