Pg 6 Cabell Co VA 23 Sep 1833 John Stephenson of Cabell Co VA aged 70, on 28 Mar last, appeared in Court to obtain benefits … (pension)… He entered the service of the US as a private 11 Jun 1778 under command of Capt William Renlfrow and marched from Bedford Co VA up the Roanoke to Kings Fort and there remained to guard said fort until 4 Sep at which time he received a discharge for 3 mos tour and he again entered as a substitute for and as a private for Wm Griffith and on 1 Aug 1779 and Mar fm Bedford Co to Chizzels Mines on the New River under the command of Lt Moses Grear and on 1 Oct following was discharged having served a tour of 3 mos … and 22 Aug 1780 he again entered into the service as a private and substitute for Wm Stephenson and marched from Henry Court House VA to NC by the old Sury towns and thence to Gibson’s Court House where he remained until the end of 3 mos when he was discharged he marched under Lt Linty Choice to Guilford and then was attached to Lt Raymys? Company and belonged to the regiment commanded by Maj Henry Conoway.

5. Name officers you served with: I recollected of no continental and militia regiments except those commanded by Maj Movies and Maj Conoway who had the command the tour I march to Guilford as to the General circumstances of his service he refers the court to the foregoing declaration.
6. Discharges Received: received two discharges for my first and 2nd tours, signed by Capt Renfrow and Lt Moses Grear, but for the last tour of duty I received no written discharge and have lost both my discharges.
7. Names of persons who can testify to your character: Elisha McComas, James McGinnis, Daniel Davis, John Samuels and Edmund McGinnis.
