Rev Howard Wade Dead. A Prominent Minister of Highland County - Widely Known Man. Monterey VA 18 Oct - Rev. Howard Wade d: at 4 o’clock this morning at his home, on Back Creek, 9 mi south of Monterey aged 61 yrs. ... For several years Mr. Wade was a local preacher and exhorter & was finally licensed to preach & assigned work by the VA Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. .. for past 5 yrs has been an intruse sufferer. Father of 10 children ... When the county was organized, Mr. Wade’s grandfather, Rev Otho Wade, was the first preacher, and the only man for several years, authorized to celebrate the rights of matrimony, and couples came to him for many miles to have him officiate in this capacity. The authority was based upon a license issued & signed by Bishop Asbury, the original copy still being in the possession of the family. ... Mr. Wade was ... a member of Highland Lodge, No. 10 A. F. & A. M. & was buried with Masonic honors, the interment being in the family burying-ground on the old home place. The services were in charge of Revs Clark, Rider & Himinous. The active pall-bearers were John A. Whitelaw, Jacob Havener, Charles Hildebrand, Lynn Sullinberger, J. Ed. Arbogast & C. S. Peterson, assisted by his 6 nephews, Messrs Elihu & Isaac Gun, Robert Wiley, James Gunn, David Woods, & Robert Chestnut
