Pg 83 Gilbert De Clare, the Red, Knt, Baron of Clare, Suffolk, 9th Earl of Clare, 3rd Earl of Gloucester, 6th Earl of Hertford. At the death of King Henry III 16 Nov 1272, the Earl took the lead in swearing fealty to Edward I, who was then in Sicily returning from the Crusade. Pg 83 Proposals for his (Gilbert De Clare) marr to the King's dau were made as early as May 1283.

In Apr 1264 (1) he led the massacre of the Jews at Canterbury as Simon de Montfort had done in London.” At the battle of Lewes the following May “the Earl commanded the 2nd line of the battle and took the King (Henry III) prisoner, having hamstrung his horse. As Prince Edward (later Edward I) had also been captured, Montford and the Earl were now supreme.” But by the following year Gilbert had changed sides “and in the battle of Evesham, 4 Aug, in which Montfort was slain, commanded the 2nd division and contributed largely to the victory … (and) at the death of Henry III, 16 Nov 1272, the Earl took the lead in swearing fealty to Edward I.”17289
