Pg 14 Katherine De Roet had formerly been the governess to (John of Lancaster) daughters, and then his mistress, and by her he had children, born before marriage, with eldest son, John, born before the death of her husband, Hugh Swynford. The marr: was ratified and confirmed during the Great Schism by the Roman pope Boniface IX. Their 3 sons were legitimised, with the assent of Parliament, on 9 Feb 1396/7, the patent confirmed by King Henry IV on 10 Feb 1406/7, but with a saving clause barring them from succession to the throne. Their children were given the name Beaufort from their father's (lost) castle in Champagne which had devolved on him through his first wife, Blanche of Lancaster, a descendant of Blanche d'Artois who had purchased the lordship of Beaufort in 1270. 17287

Pg 185 Chap 2, Katherine Roet, who had been the governess of John’s (John of Gaunt) older daughters, was already the mother of four of his children, who were given the surname Beaufort after his (lost) lands in Champaign, and were declared legitimate by the Pope and by Parliament 1397.17289

Vol 19 Image259of1413 Pg 244 Catherine Swynford was mistress to John of Gaunt’s daughters, Philippa and Elizabeth. She was one of the ladies who escorted Isabella of France to Calais in Oct 1396. In the following year (1397) her issue by the duke (John of Gaunt) were declared legitimate in parliament. (Rot. Parl. iii 343). Her children took the name Beaufort from the castle of that name in Anjou where they were born.
