Research
From the Bath County Order Books, a. number of entries about John is found. 3. p. 112, June 11, 1793: "John Gum deed of Bargain and Sale to Abraham Gum, proved and 0. R." (Ordered Recorded) (This was probably John 3 Gum to his son, Abraham 4 Gum, and not the John 4 Gum of this chapter)21238

ltr written by Adam L. Gum - My father’s name was Otho and was the s/o Abraham who was the s/o John Gum who moved from Rockingham County to Crabbottom, Pendleton Co & settled on the land now owned by Allen. As to the date of this move... bef 1775. I have been informed that they moved from what was then called Sugarland in MD to Rockingham.30090 (moved from Sugarland, MD to Rockingham County, VA?)

Pg 1214288 2 Mar 1735/36 “John3Gum, minor s/o John Gum, late dec’d, appeared in court & Praid admittance to choose Guardian which was granted. Whereupon he chose his father-in-law, Griffith Jones Guardian” (S: SussexCo Orphan’s Ct Bk 1728-44 p.86) The word father-in-law did not mean what it does today. He may have meant step-father or his step-brother who was named Griffith Jones to be his Guardian because Griffith Jones Sr. was deceased. (Who was this Griffith Jones?)

Pg 14 some descendants believe (her family name) was Claypoole, but we cannot find an Alice in the Claypoole family history to verify this.14288

Pg 136 In the will of John ffisher made 6 Feb 1685 the property, land, etc to his wife Margaret & children: Thomas, John, James, Rachell, Sarah & Alis Fisher.29891 (Perhaps her ancestor? John Fisher died too early to be her father)

Pg 42521240 We find deeds signed by John Gum and wife, whose name was spelled at various times as Alisi, Alce, Ellis, which are all variations of the name Alice. We do not know her surname. Some suspect she was a Claypool (Claypole), but we have not found a Claypool family with a daughter named Alice, of an age to marry John Gum.
There was an Isaac Fisher who lived in Sussex Co DE near the Gum family. He had sons named Isaac and Adam both names used later in the Gum family.
