ChapIII Pg17-8453 William Stephenson son of James Sr served in War 1812, in Gen Edward Tupper’s Regiment. In “History of the Hanging Rock Iron Region” pub 1916, page 378; “In July 1812, Gen. Edw. Tupper of Gallia Co. came to the Licks to seek volunteers to fill up the Regt which he had been commissioned to raise. More than 200 men enlisted for 6 months service. First camp after leaving Jackson was near a big spring on Lower Salt Creek, where many men carved their names on a large boulder, fallen from the cliffs above some years before. This was known as Camp Rock, until it was blasted & used for building a new pike, an inexcusable piece of vandalism. In 1895 it was in place, and bore the legend “Camp of 1812”.
