Misc. Notes
"This sad event will be rec with deep regret by many in this community who had an opportunity to become aware of the many fine qualities and the womanly graces of the deceased - And who will join with her immediate friends in bemoaning the peculiarly sad fate of one so young and promising. And he who has chiefly cause to mourn has a wide sympathy in his grievous affliction ..." Planters Advocate 12/2/18579369

Berkeley Castle Pamphlet7708: English-Norman Castle. Built by Col Samuel Taylor Suit in 1885. He was a wealthy businessman from Suitland, MD. Col Suit fought in the Civil War under Gen Robert E. Lee. He was also appointed ambassador to England by Presidents Grant and Hayes during their administrations. He was the owner of a large estate with an English manor house, which he named Suitland, and today the town of Suitland, MD bears it's name. When Col Suit was 46 years old he fell in love with a young debutante from Alabama. Rosa Pelham was the daughter of Congressman Charles Palham of Alabama and was 17 years old at the time. The Colonel proposed marriage but due to the age difference Rosa turned him down. About five years later they were having dinner at one of the hotels downtown when the subject of castles came up. Rosa made the comment that she would love to own a castle overlooking the town of Berkeley Springs. The Colonel took the hint and said, "I will build you a castle if you will marry me." This time she accepted, and that afternoon they marked off the location where they wanted their castle to be built. They then proceeded to by the land. A few days later they were married in Washington, D.C. They had three children two sons and a daughter. The daughter died in her late teens from typhoid fever. The two sons grew up, were educated, and then went out West to live. .... The Castle ... I took about three years to complete and just before it was completed, Colonel Suit died.

St Barnabas Church Pamphlet8067
Another notable parishioner interred at St Barnabas was Samuel Taylor Suit. Colonel S.T.Suit (The Colonel being the honorary Kentucky variety) was one of the colorful figures of the county during the 19th Century. He was a politician, businessman, agriculturist, railroad builder and castle builder. The area - Suit's Land - where this entrepreneur lived and worked is known to us today as Suitland. Also, still in evidence today is the castle he built in Berkeley Springs, WV, for his third wife, Rosa Pelham, daughter of Congressman Charles Pelham of Alabama. Col. Suit made considerable business transactions in the area with his brother-in-law, Peter G. Grimes, who married the Colonel's sister, Kate. Their son was S. Taylor Grimes, who photographed the c. 1902 picture we have in hand of St. Barnabas Church. Kate Suit Grimes is also buried here.

WV Castle Article8070:
Castle built shortly after the Civil War by Col Samuel T. Suit as a gift for his wife, Rosa. Suit died before his dream was completed, leaving his wife a sizable fortune. Aware of her inability to handle money, he stipulated in his will that she must complete the castle to receive his entire fortune. Mrs. Suit obeyed. Then ran through the money in a whirl of parties which, night after night, kept the castle ablaze with lights. A lawyer who handled the estate told Mrs. Sally Horn, an acquaintance of Mrs. Suit's still living in Berkeley Springs, that the widow spent $50,000 in six months. But she was generous as well as frivolous, and much of her money went to local less-fortunates. ... peacocks as pets ... moved to a cabin on nearby Sleepy Creek. There she lived in one room with a half dozen cats and dogs and a host of chickens.
Pg 3 On Sep 4 1883. Suit's age was written on the (marriage) certificate as "between 50 and 60". Samuel Taylor Suit was born in Bladensburgh, Prince George's County, MD in 1830. Pg 3 Young Suit started work as an errand boy in a Washington drygoods store. While still in his teens, the ambitious lad, refused a college education by his father, left home & found employment in Keokuk, IA. Pg 3 Suit worked in a distillery, soon he built his own plant, owned the largest liquor warehouse in Louisville. Pg 3 owned Spa Springs Hotel in Bladensburgh; and was president of the Washington & Chesapeake Railroad and the Washington City & Point Lookout Railroad and served a term as a MD state senator. Pg 5 He (Col Suit) buried in the graveyard of St Barnabas Chapel, Oxon Hill, near beloved Suitland. His gravestone was carved "Aged 58."(Birth=1830) But his death certificate was inscribed "56 years, 1 month, and 18 days old" (Birth = Jul 13, 1832).

"Castle Built to Win a Bride"7711: He (S.T.Suit) gained social position by marrying into a prominent family (Arelia Wilmarth). This marriage ended in divorce. "Suitland's 'colonel' built 1887 castle for sale in W.VA": $3 million includes antique furnishings.

Pg R33 Suit remarried, and he and his second wife, Aurelia, had a son Arthur, born in 1862. Suit and Aurelia were divorced in 1879. He returned to Prince George's County in 1867, ... in Suitland, and packaged his whiskey in little brown jugs

"Suitland Named After Colonel Samuel Taylor Suit, Pioneer Philantrophist"8071:
Money brought to Colonel Suit high ideas and in order to gratify these, he built upon his Suitland farm, just a distance back of what is now Silver Hill Road and Suitland Road, a fine house patterned after an English mansion, such as had fascinated him on his frequent trips to Europe. It was a spacious house, built for the entertainment of guests, and had every convenience in use at that time, including a wine cellar that would have done justice to the barons of Southern MD during Colonial days. The living rooms were decorated with fine paintings, and with art objects brought from abroad.
Although Colonel Suit was famous for his hospitality, he was best-known throughout the nation for his many benevolences. But he did like to entertain prominent people and such notables as Presidents Grant and Rutherford B. Hayes and other high government officials were frequent guests at his mansion. It seems that happiness and sadness are inseparable and Colonel Suit had both. But he was tender-hearted and kind, and loved children, of whom he had several.

The Builders7598
Samuel Suit began his business career as errand boy at a dry goods store in downtown Washington, DC. He later migrated to Louisville, KY, where he was employed in a brewery. He married the daughter of the owner and they inherited part of the business, and he became a legendary Kentucky Colonel. His wife died young, without children. He sold his business (Louisville, KY) and went to New York City. There he engaged himself in the stock market and eventually obtained a seat on the exchange. He built a mill, distillery, store, race track, and a mansion comparable to his friends in Washington. His whiskey was marked in little brown jugs and became a popular brand across the county.
Samuel Suit was also active in Republican politics and served in the Maryland Senate. He owned the Spa Springs Hotel in Bladensburg, was president of Anacostia Wharf and Docking Company, Pres. of the Washington &Chesapeake Railroad,&the Washington&Point Lookout RR.
From the Record - Certificate of Marriage, District of Columbia, show the groom, S. Taylor Suit, age between 50 and 60, Residence, Suitland, MD - bride, Martha Rosa Pelham, age 22, Residence, Washington DC, Birthplace, Alabama.
The Suit Cottage - "The News", of Sep 4, 1885, said "Mr. Suit who purchased a lot from H. H. Boyd, along Warm Springs Ridge, some time ago, is laying the foundation for his cottage." Comment ... summer residences ..were referred to as cottages. Rosa never lived in the Suitland mansion because it burned before they were married. They lived at 228 New Jersey Avenue, in the city of Washington

The Sunday Star Washington, DC, Sep 5, 1937828
Col. Samuel Taylor Suit, who refused a college education, left Washington and returned a wealthy man. Many years ago he was a successful business man in Washington and Maryland.
Samuel Suit of Suitland started work .. an errand boy in the dry goods store of Darius Clagett & Co on the north side of Market Space between Eighth and Ninth streets, according to the city directory, but more .. on the northeast corner of Pennsylvania avenue and Ninth Street. ... Then came Darius Clagett .. in 1840.
(Samuel) became a distiller himself and built what was for many years the largest liquor warehouse in Louisville.
Money brought to Col. Suit high ideas and in order to gratify these he built upon his farm, a distance back of the Silver Hill road, a fine house patterned after an English mansion, such as had fascinated him on his frequent visits to Europe. It was a spacious house, built for the entertainment of guests, and had every convenience in use at that time. Including a wine cellar that would have done justice to the barons of Southern MD during Colonial days. The living rooms were decorated with fine paintings, and with art objects brought from abroad.
The grounds were elaborately landscaped with exotic shrubbery, statuary and Summer houses, and a greenhouse, attended by a Belgian gardener, furnished the mansion with flowers in Winter. He had thoroughbred horses, carriages and an English coachman, whose quarters over the stable were even supplied with a billiard table. On the estate he built two artificial lakes and stocked them with fish; indeed, there were few things absent from what was built for a country gentleman’s home.
He planted out many acres in fruit trees, and as these grew in size and the quantity of fruit increased, he shipped to other cities what he could not dispose of in Washington.
The colonel was famous for his hospitality, and he was known throughout the county for his many charities. But he did like to entertain prominent people and such notables as Presidents Grant and Rutherford B. Hayes and Mr. Justice Miller of the US Supreme Court were frequent guests at his mansion, and often stopped in to see the colonel when out for a carriage ride.
Some marriages are not always harmonious, and Col. Suit’s second marriage was apparently not a complete success for about this time Col. and Mrs. Suit were legally separated. Subsequently he was married to the daughter of Charles Pelham, Representative from Alabama.
However, his greatest trouble and loss began in 1876 when his costly mansion was completely destroyed by fire. It occurred while he was serving as one of the judges of agriculture at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia and the shock was a severe one. Although he never rebuilt the old residence, yet he continued to live at Suitland and engaged in several more or less unsuccessful ventures.
In this connection, he early conceived the idea of running a more direct road from his farm in Washington, and this was a complete success, and one of the best monuments the man could have made for himself. It still bears the name Suitland road. The old route, by way of Silver Hill to Anacostia Bridge, is about three and one-fourth miles, while the one built by Mr. Suit, and presented to the people of his county, shortens the distance considerably.
Col. Suit’s enterprises were varied, and at different times he began the construction of two railroads intended to supply the citizens of Washington with waterside resorts, easy of access to the city. One of these roads was finally completed, and became the Washington & Chesapeake Railroad, while the other-the Washington City & Point Lookout Railroad - was probably never completed and consequently was a great loss.
Col. Suit was active in Prince George’s County politics, and served a term in the State Senate. His title of colonel had no connection with military affairs and was given only as a mark of respect.
... Miss Flora E. Crosier ... Her father, Horace Crosier, came here from Stamford, CT, shortly after the Civil War, at the request of Col. Suit, to look after his saw mills, and later looked after his stock breeding and virtually became manager of the Suit estate. At an early date he bought 50 acres of Col. Suit’s land and later added to this all of which is now owned by Miss Crosier, who lives on the place in the homestead built in 1872, and which is the oldest house in that neighborhood.
From Suitland a short trip was taken to St. Barnabas’ Chapel, near Oxon Hill, in the churchyard of which Col. Suit is buried, his grave being marked with a modest but neat stone and next to him is the grave of his sister, Mrs. Kate Grimes. Nearby is Col. Suit’s father, Fielder Suit, who was born August 30, 1805, and died Nov 8, 1870.

Subj: Senator Samuel Taylor Suit
Jan 19, 1976
Ms. Darlene Horton, Legislative Aid to Delegate Lorraine Scheehan requested info on Sen. Samuel Taylor Suit. The only thing I found was that he is listed in the Senate Journal for 1874 and 1876 meaning that he was elected in 1873 and term expired in 1878. He was a Senator for Prince George’s County and the town of Suitland was named after him. I checked several Directories and Dictionaries (biographical) and found nothing. Col Suit - Builder of a Castle ... and a Railroad7715
Pg 33-40 of 85 ... estate “Suitland” ... Presidents Grant and Hayes enjoyed the Colonel’s hospitality as did the British Commissioners sent over to settle the Confederate raider Alabama claims against the United States. The English were not only wined and dined, but were treated to a ride to the hounds as well. The estate had extensive orchards whose produce went to the Washington market and a large distillery was located there as well. While serving as a judge of agricultural exhibits at the Centennial Exposition at Philadelphia in 1876, Suit’s mansion burned to the ground. Although he continued to live on the property, the Colonel did not rebuild the house. He did build a more direct route from “Suitland” to Washington, Suitland Road, and presented it to the County as a gift. ...
Col (S. T. Suit) took as his wife in 1883 Rosa Pelham, age 22 d/o Congressman Charles Pelham of AL. The couple had met at the health spa, Berkeley Springs, and it was here that Samuel Suit built his wife a “cottage” in the form of a castle. ... Constructed from designs made by A. P. Mullett, architect of the old State, War and Navy Building (now the Executive Office Building) in Washington, the castle was begun in 1885 and was still incomplete at the time of his death in Washington in 1888. ...
His wealth was left to the widow and his first son, Arthur, received only $2,500 under terms of the will. The Colonel was buried at St Barnabas’ Church in Oxon Hill.
Pg 38 Mrs. Suit spent about $100,000 to complete the castle at Berkeley Springs and thereafter became known for her extravagant parties. ...
In 1914 the castle was sold to a bank under foreclosure for a mere $3,850. Several persons have occupied the structured since them. Its present owner is Walter M. Bird of McLean, VA who opened it to the public for an admission fee.
Col Samuel Suit maintained an interest in his native Bladensburg over the years and owned the Spa Springs Hotel there which was located on present-day Bladensburg Road about three lots north of the George Washington House. In the tax records of the Town of Bladensburg he had property valued at $5,250. This included the hotel ($2000), a house and lot occupied by William H. Swaim, probably next-door to the hotel; and 35 ac of land (valued at $35/ac) which was most likely the site of the Spa Spring, opposite the hotel. The total town tax at 15¢ per $100 valuation was $7.88. The hotel and house were sold after Col Suit’s death, but the 1890 town tax records show his heirs as still owning the acreage.
Samuel T. Suit’s interest in railroading touched two of the lines in PG County, he was one of the early movers in the organization of the Chesapeake Beach Railroad. Suit was also an incorporator an President of the Washington City and Point Lookout Railroad Company which was to play a role in the struggle between the Baltimore & Ohio and the PA Railroad. ...

Samuel Taylor Suit chose the recognizable image of the United State Capitol to adorn this advertisement for his bourbon in 1872. Although he paid homage to Kentucky where he learned the distilling trade, Suit produced most of his product just outside the nation’s capitol in a town now known as Suitland, Maryland and marketed it nationally. Suit used the image of the Capitol to lend a sense of national prominence to the bourbon that matched his ambitions as a politician and entrepreneur. This particular broadside probably circulated in New England since it directs interested parties to an agent in Boston. Broadsides like this were among the earliest forms of outdoor advertising. As printing became faster and cheaper, broadside advertisements proliferated, claiming outdoor spaces as part of the burgeoning marketplace of the late 19th century.8088

Baltimore Sun (Baltimore MD) 15 Feb 1877 Pg 4:608 Freedmen’s Bank Injunction Suit
In US Circuit Court yesterday argument was heard in the injunction suit of J.A. J. Creswell and others, commissioners &c., of the Freedmen’s National Bank of Washington, against S Taylor Suit and others to prevent the assignment of policies of insurance in several companies on a dwelling-house on Suit’s farm in Prince George’s County, which was destroyed by fire last October. Money was borrowed by Suit of the bank secured by notes and a mortgage on his farm. It was covenanted in the mortgage that the buildings should be insured for the benefit of the bank. It is charged in the bill for the injunction that Suit has assigned or was about to assign the policies to other parties. The representatives of the bank claim that their lien on the policies is superior to that of Suit’s assignees, and that the recording of the mortgage was notice to all persons of the lien of the bank. The case was argued on a motion to dissolve the injunction by John P Poe an ex-Attorney General G H Williams against the injunction and Jospeh J Stewart for it. Judge Giles held the case under consideration.

The Baltimore Sun (Baltimore MD) 9 Apr 1877 Pg 4:608 Suit Against Insurance Companies
S. Taylor Suit, by his counsel, John P Poe, has bought suit in the Superior Court against six insurance companies on policies of insurance, aggregating some thirty thousand dollars on Suit’s dwelling house on a far in Prince George’s County which was destroyed by fire last October. The Freedmen’s National Savings Bank of Washington made claim to the policies as having been taken out to secure a mortgage on the farm, &c., for money loaned by the bank to Suit, but Judge Giles, in the US District Court, decided the covenant in regard to insurance did not run with land & that the right of other of Suit’s assignees of the policies was superior in effect to the bank’s. The companies now sued by Suit are the VA Fire and Marine of Richmond, Potomac Fire and National Fire of Baltimore, Royal of Liverpool, Continental of New York and Hudson of Jersey City.
